202048 Conscious Pariahs
I can, therefore I am; I rebel therefore we are. Two quotes in one phrase; Simone Weil and Albert Camus, respectively, reveal the meaning of these anonymous faces of human dignity. The first 13 portraits of this series still in progress appeared at the end of the exhibition Beings Out of Range (Seres fuera de campo), an unfinished (incomplete) conclusion open to a new beginning. My painting advances recovering previous works. In this specific case, stemming from Hannah Arendt and her singular concept of the 'conscious pariah'. It dares to review, as a quote or a margin note, the meaning of the German painter, Gerhard Richter's 48 portraits of notable people, which was also subject of study in his day. The quote means to waken this work from its ideological and historical lethargy, replacing certain absences in a critical manner, to evidence this other knowledge, displaced because it was inconvenient, that has unfortunately left no trace in the encyclopaedias and does, however, exist.
